Eligibility:

  • Must be currently enrolled full-time undergraduate who resides in or attends college in Los Angeles County
  • Must have completed at least one semester of college by June 2008
  • May not plan to graduate before December 2008
  • Candidates are sought from all areas of undergraduate study

Deadline is May 2, 2008, but early application is highly encouraged!

$3,500 stipend for 10 weeks; Full time (40 hrs/wk, some nights and weekends); Participation in special L.A. County Intern events

Shakespeare Festival/LA's Summer Interns play key roles in making the Summer Festival happen. Learn how a nonprofit theater works and gain job experience by joining our team in one of the following positions:

Development Intern:

This intern will get involved in all aspects of fundraising: coordinating the Sponsorship program, hosting special donor events, researching and writing a grant proposal, and helping the Development department to run smoothly. Marketing/PR Intern:

In addition to assisting with day-to-day Marketing and Membership support, the Marketing/PR Intern will partner with the Communications Manager to develop and coordinate Press Night and special Membership Events, like Young Member Night. These internships are sponsored by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors through the Los Angeles County Arts Commission. More than 125 undergraduate interns will participate in the program this year at 87 performing, presenting, and literary nonprofit arts organizations and municipal arts agencies throughout LA County. In addition to their full-time 10 week paid internship, interns will participate in four educational events as part of the program, which are funded by the Getty Foundation. The educational events are designed to provide interns with a broader perspective of the vibrant arts and cultural landscape of the County. Shakespeare Festival/LA wishes to cast flexible, versatile, sexy, risk-taking, classically-trained ensemble actors with strong comic skills of all ethnicities and ages for its summer production of The Taming of the Shrew.

Production Details:

First Rehearsal June 9, 2008. Performances July 9 to July 27, 2008. Roles for both Equity and Non-Equity Actors are available.

Character Breakdown:

Petruchio (Male, mid 30s-early 40s)
Supremely self-confident, athletic and muscular, handsome, with great bravura and willing to go where no man has gone before. Petruchio drives an old Jeep Cherokee without the top.
Kate (Female, 30s)
A sexy, sharp witted, wildcat who knows exactly what she wants and how to use her assets, Kate drives a Range Rover. A strong physical comic actress, athletic and well skilled with classical text.
Bianca (Female, 20s)
Young, alluring, manipulative flirt, capable of playing sweet innocence and turning on a dime into a vixen. Bianca drives a Mini Cooper.
Baptista (Male, 50s-60s)
A wealthy, status-seeking wheeler dealer who drives a hard bargain. While offering glimpses of humanity and compassion. Baptista drives a Lexus. A skilled character actor in his 60s, hearty, adventurous, strong comic timing.
Biondello (Male, late teens-early 20s)
Quintessential undercover operative, with a keen eye for financial opportunities, he’s on everybody’s take. Rides with Lucentio.
Lucentio (Male, 20s)
Young handsome romantic man driven by his obsession to possess the woman he desires at all costs. Lucentio drives a Lamborghini. Actor needs exceptional facilities with classical text.
Tranio (Male, 20s)
Master of disguise who is also the faithful friend and accomplice to love-driven deceits. A vivid and inventive imagination, and is a schemer. Rides with Lucentio.
Gremio (Male, 60s)
Crafty, withered, sly fox, a vengeful, meddling negotiator. Drives a Cadillac. An old Cadillac.
Drumio (Male, mid 30s-early 40s)
A wily rascal. Petruchio’s shill, his “partner in crime”, always manages to cut himself in for a piece of the action. A confidence man. Earthy sidekick. Strong physical comic, agile.
Vincentio (Male, 50s-60s)
Cultured, wealthy, well-appointed, well-mannered merchant. He demands respect. Rides in a Lincoln Town Car.
Hortensio (Male, mid 30s-early 40s)
The bumbling guy-next-door, longing to make a deal beyond his reach, passionate pragmatist, dealing out of his league. Rides a Vespa.
Pedant (Male, 50s-60s)
Well-meaning, well-intentioned dupe. A gullible innocent. World traveler, but he travels coach. Drives a VW Bug.
The Widow (Female, 20s-30s)
Curly and contrary and eager to secure a commitment from someone she can control. Drives her late husband''s BMW.
