The Shakespeare Center?!?!...wait, that's new...
A word from our Artistic Director, Ben Donenberg:
"Gentlefriends, when I started Shakespeare Festival/LA in 1986, the name was functional: all we did was free, outdoor summer Shakespeare.
"But now, 'Shakespeare Festival/LA' is a misnomer. We have grown leaps and bounds since that first summer, adding nationally recognized youth employment programs and professional development sevices to our ever-expanding repertoire.
"The Shakespeare Center of Los Angeles isn't much of a change - we are already a vital educational, cultural and employment resource for the youth, artists and educators in our community.
"So, as we approached our 25th year, we decided that it was finally time to take Shakespeare's words to heart and hold, as 'twere, the mirror up to nature, and embrace a moniker that truly reflects what our organization does - and, more importantly, what it will continue to do."

New and Notables
The Shakespeare Center is proud to present the U.S. debut of Romeo y Julieta, a 65-minute Spanish language adapation of the classic tale performed by the University of Guadalajara's A la Deriva Teatro group.
Aimed at Spanish speaking children seven years and older, Romeo y Julieta will be performed at five schools across the Southland October 6 - 10, 2009.
The final matinee performance, on Saturday, October 10 @ 3pm, will be the only one to feature simultaneous English language translation. Admission to this performance is free, but seats are limited. Get your tickets today!

Download the independent report that shows the increase in standardized test scores, GPAs, and graduation rates of our WPY participants compared to their peers.
This year, we collected more than 7,100 items in our Food For Thought Drive...and that was just at the Cathedral! (We'll keep you posted about the South Bay numbers!)
David Ng from the Los Angeles Times says As You Like It is "a finely acted production [that] succeeds at creating a pleasantly tipsy experience." KCRW's theatre critic James Taylor called it "one of the best outdoor Shakespeare productions L.A. has seen in a while." What did you think? Downtown or South Bay Patrons, weigh in!
